The mission behind SkillStart is simple yet urgent: to get rid of the barriers preventing orphanage students in Delhi-NCR from accessing educational and professional opportunities, delivering comprehensive, end-to-end support.
Launched in July 2024, SkillStart started with raising funds to upgrade a computer lab at [NGO NAME], establishing a dedicated space equipped with modern computers, internet access, and audio-visual tools to foster students’ educational and professional growth. To open doors for new opportunities, SkillStart built The Opportunity Shelf, an open-access container of meticulously curated enrichment programs, including low-cost coding bootcamps, leadership courses, and online certifications customised to students’ needs. In September 2024, we introduced the WatchStart YouTube, offering engaging episodes on critical leadership skills that range from collaboration and communication to conflict resolution and building resilience. We laced each delivery with real-world examples, embodied analyses, and practical tips. Building on the series’ success, SkillStart established the SkillStart Circle, a mentorship program connecting high school volunteers with orphanage students for monthly 1:1 sessions focused on resume-building, interview preparation, and goal-setting. To be able to impart empathetic mentorship, we developed a TrainStart Buddy Toolkit - a six-part guide immersed in sensitivity, trauma-informed communication, and career-readiness training. Woven through such targeted efforts of upgraded facilities, accessible resources, leadership opportunities, and structured mentorship, SkillStart strives to empower socio-economically disadvantaged students in Delhi-NCR orphanages to overcome obstacles and achieve new targets in the academic and professional realms.
